A U.K. advisory committee has voted to remove the diabetes Drug Avandia from the U.K. market over concerns that it can aggravate heart problems in some users. European regulators will begin reviewing the Drug’s safety profile this week and are expected to make a decision on the fate of the medication by September 23. The Drug remains on the market in the U.S. despite concerns raised at a recent Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) advisory panel meeting, in which it was discussed whether to remove the Drug from the American market because of increased cardiovascular risks . The board ultimately voted to keep the Drug in some form. You can’t call it a vote of confidence. If anything, the approval will alert physicians to concerns that the Drug puts people at greater risk of heart attacks and strokes , according to some studies. This will likely result in fewer prescriptions written for the Type 2 diabetes Drug, which brought in $1 billion in sales last year with more than 2 million prescriptions filled. The American Diabetes Association voted to unanimously advise that GlaxoSmithKline ’s blockbuster Drug not be used, and a majority of the FDA panel – 21 out of 33 members – say they believe Avandia puts users at greater risk of cardiovascular problems.
